Cold rooms, strange noises and a bill you cannot predict

The thermostat says heat and nothing happens. The furnace clicks, runs for a minute, shuts off. Radiators upstairs are hot. The back bedroom is cold. The boiler bangs every morning.

Underneath all of it is the real worry: what will this cost?

Waiting rarely makes it cheaper. A short-cycling furnace wears out parts faster. A boiler losing water can lock out on the coldest night of the year. In a 2-flat over an unheated basement, a few hours without heat in January can freeze the pipes. Then you have a second problem.

Your heat is often one part away from working

A no-heat call usually comes down to one worn part: an igniter, a flame sensor, a pressure switch, a circulator pump. That is a repair, not a new furnace.

The risk is who answers your call. Some HVAC ads on Google are run by companies outside the city, or referral sites that pass your number to whoever is free. Neither knows your house, and a stranger with a sales target is more likely to talk about replacement than repair.

Fix It Aid is a Chicago company with a City of Chicago general contractor licence (TGC144939). We know the boilers, radiators and tight basements in older city homes. We find what actually failed first.

HVAC questions

Will you try to sell me a new furnace?

No. If the system can be repaired at a fair price, we repair it. If it cannot, we tell you why and give you both prices.

How often should HVAC be serviced?

Once a year for heating and once for cooling. In Chicago, book the furnace or boiler between September and November, before the first hard freeze.

Do you work on old boilers and radiators?

Yes. Steam and hot water systems in older Chicago homes and 2-flats are everyday work for us.

Do you come to my neighborhood?

We work across the City of Chicago.

Do you do HVAC maintenance plans and tune-ups?

Yes. We offer a furnace tune-up and an AC tune-up, duct cleaning and an HVAC maintenance plan. Regular HVAC maintenance in Chicago keeps the system running efficiently and is required to keep many manufacturer warranties valid.

Do you do commercial HVAC in Chicago?

Yes. We handle commercial HVAC and rooftop unit (RTU) repair for small commercial buildings and restaurants across Chicago. As a roofing and general contractor, rooftop equipment is a natural fit for us.

What if I smell gas?

Leave the house and call your gas company or 911 from outside. Do not switch lights on or off. Call us once the gas company says it is safe.
